I apologize in advance for this being ridiculously long...
But first and foremost - I have a job! I've actually had several jobs - a few catering gigs and one day working for the central government (that I quit the same day because I was offered a job that paid more...). So now I do marketing/PR for the City of York Council! I definitely have an email address that ends in @york.gov.uk - how cool is that?! It sounds like my main job will be figuring out a way to promote/market a website that they created that enables all the small towns of North Yorkshire to post public sector jobs on but isn't getting used very much. I'll get to do a bit of traveling as well in order to form better partnership with the other districts and counties involved in the partnership. It definitely beats the central government job (I would have just been a secretary there - here I'm actually kind of important).
This weekend Mindy and I did two different catering jobs. The first one on Saturday was a wedding disco and it was easy peasy. All I did was clear tables and stand at a buffet and tell people what the food was. Learned that traditional English wedding cake is a fruitcake... And there was TONS of all the food left over so Mindy and I got to take leftovers home (I'm still eating leftovers...and I get to walk back to the hostel to have lunch, my commute from work to the hostel is a whole 4 minutes).
But then Sunday was a total disaster. That one was 'silver service' which meant for the main course instead of bringing the guests their food on a plate - you served them at their table. You hold the platter on one arm and then hold a fork and spoon chopsticks style in your other hand and serve the people that way. Well I was having a really rough day from the start - my alarm didn't go off and Mindy was my back up since we were both going to the same job. But when she asked someone if I was up - they told them yes! When in fact I was fast asleep. So - most of you know how I am when I'm woken up out of a deep sleep...grouchy. I had no time to shower or do anything so away I run to this event greasy hair and makeup from the wedding the night before still on only to find out the even I was working was for the High Judges and royalty (nobody really important though). So needless to say I was already feeling awful and then to not know how to do silver service...I was shaking. I actually was doing pretty well with the whole serving thing until one of the men on my side of the table didn't like the cut of lamb I had served him. And serving someone while you're shaking is rather difficult. Impossible really. So I was rescued by the manager, but horribly embarrassed. So what does your lovely Sarah do when she's stressed? Cry. Oh yeah...I had to run back to the kitchen like I was five and collect myself. But I did collect myself - and served dessert and coffee - even made tea that Lady Whatever liked. I survived and I got paid. So all was well.
In other news, yesterday morning in the shower I got stung by a bee in the middle of my chest (it was in my towel and stung me just as I was cozying up after hitting the cold English bathroom floor). It hurts like heck - and of course I took off getting bennedryl from my pharmacy list that was getting too long. Luckily I remembered some random tip I heard that taking tobacco and wetting it will reduce the swelling of a bee sting and draw out the stinger. And the stinger had already fallen out when I smashed it (against me) and killed it. The funny thing was, being the good Texan girl I am, I was pretty sure a scorpion had gotten me - that's what it felt like. But then I remembered where I was, and took a look at the shower basin to see the bee that got me.
Well I've definitely been the excitement of the hostel - let me tell you. Waking up late - getting stung by a bee. What more can I do this week?!
Love you all and miss all of you too. Send me emails!!! All I usually get is junk mail and it makes me feel unloved(but HUGE thanks to those of you who do write me - it always makes my day!). I want to know how everything is back home/campus - even boring stuff, but especially juicy town gossip.
Cross your fingers that we find a flat this week!
