Adventures in/around York Minster

Okay - so I haven't mastered posting pictures and these are a little out of order. Basically last Saturday I decided I had lived in York long enough and needed to do some touristy things. So I got up at daybreak (okay so it's winter and the sun doesn't come up until 7.15ish and sets at 4.30), ruined some laundry and set out to see the sights. I was pleased to arrive at the Minster just as it opened, and just in time to listen to the organist rehearse. I'm way to spoiled by Dr. Heller - btw. These children are from Tanzania and were performing in the cathedral. The accoustics of the space just captured their voices and enthusiasm perfectly. Made me wish I had my horn - it's like the accoustics of a giant bathroom! Brilliant!

This was a side room - used for the meetings of high religious officials. Oh to be a fly on the wall/amazing stained glass windows.

The Rose Window over the entrance to the cathedral. The organ is just over these apostles. I took movies of the cathedral with the organist rehearsing. But they seem to be way to large to send by email. So if I'm on AIM and you want them - I'll be happy to pass them along.

Just more pics of the fabulous York Minster (and only about half of the inside space I took pictures of - it's absolutely massive).

Leave it to me to find a brass band in the same day. This was an outdoor Rememberence Day service (a week early). Today was actually Rememberence Day - as I was out shopping an announcement came over the loudspeaker and we all observed two minutes silence at 11AM. Is it just me? I don't think we do that in the States for Veteren's Day.

Service goers. I was also happy to actually recognize some of the tunes. Can we say #12?
(Okay so only wind ensemble people will get that one...)
