The Job Search Begins

I'm now on free internet from BUNAC - so this is a little more relaxed! Mindy and I made it through orientation yesterday, opened our bank accounts and got mobile phones (email me for the number - we get free incoming calls!) So far everything has been about getting down to business and we haven't really had a chance to do much sightseeing other than our treks around the City.

Being the media fanatic I am - I've been picking up London's two rival free newspapers which are aimed at a the 20-something aged Tube riders. They're very amusing, even if some of the British wording throws me off sometimes. Yesterday's headline read "Parents Told to Shop Children." I looked at it, scratched my head, read the article, and still the headline just didn't make sense. I had to ask the Kiwi woman who is our bunkmate to decipher it for me - apparently 'shop' can also mean to turn someone into the police. An Aha! moment for sure.

Walking back to our hostel last night, Mindy and I found the London equivalent to the Alamo guy that screams sermans. We passed by St. Paul's where a young man was yelling things from the Koran rather loudly. While Mindy snapped a few pics (from a distance) of the three or so policemen putting a stop to it, I chatted with a man in a business suit on the corner who was as amused as we were. I was enlightened on how the British treat free speach (Yay for Media Law in action abroad!)

I've also been impressed at how economically Mindy and I have been eating - Boot's lunch specials are our best friend. Sandwich, crisps, and a drink for no more than £3.30 (and I usually end up getting it for less!)

Well, back to the job hunting!
